On November 15, local time, Mr. Xing Yabin, Vice President of Suzhou Talesun Photovoltaic Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “Talesun Photovoltaic”), was invited to attend the High-Level Dialogue on Enabling the Scaling Up of Renewable Energy in Africa, held in Egypt. Through a virtual video link, he engaged in an in-depth discussion with ministers from Egypt, South Africa, and other countries on the current status and future prospects of renewable energy in Africa.
This high-level forum was organized by Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL), the African Climate Foundation (ACF), Bloomberg Philanthropies, the China Renewable Energy Industry Association (CREIA), the ClimateWorks Foundation (CWF), and the World Resources Institute (WRI). The forum is of great significance for exploring cooperation between Africa’s clean energy sector and China’s renewable energy industry.
Africa is the world’s most solar‑rich continent, yet the share of installed photovoltaic capacity remains extremely small, accounting for only 1% of the continent’s energy mix. Moreover, most of this capacity is concentrated in South Africa and North African countries, while the rest of sub-Saharan Africa remains largely underserved. Coupled with differing consumption patterns, it is also challenging for PV entrepreneurs to penetrate Africa’s vast market for clean electricity.
China is a steadfast supporter of Africa’s sustainable development. Talesun Photovoltaic closely aligns with national policies, has been deeply engaged in the African market for many years, and maintains strong cooperative relationships with its African customers. This year, a 325 MW photovoltaic module manufacturing base jointly built by Talesun Photovoltaic and ARTsolar was officially commissioned in South Africa. In 2021, Talesun Photovoltaic cumulatively shipped 28.5 MW to Africa, and in the first half of 2022 (as of June), it had already delivered a total of 16.5 MW to the continent.
At this high-level forum, Mr. Xing Yabin, Vice President of Talesun Photovoltaic, stated that Africa possesses enormous potential for developing renewable energy, and the unique “auction” mechanism in the African market has helped establish a long‑term, efficient new‑energy marketplace. However, as Africa stands at a critical juncture in its energy transition, the construction of power infrastructure—including power plants, transmission networks, and distribution grids—relies heavily on overseas investment, with large volumes of off‑grid solar and photovoltaic products being imported. Therefore, building a comprehensive solar‑energy industry chain in Africa is of paramount importance. China is a steadfast supporter and key partner in Africa’s green transformation, having collaborated on more than a hundred green‑energy projects to date. These initiatives help African nations better leverage the advantages of clean energy sources such as solar, hydropower, wind, and biogas, thereby advancing sustainable development across the continent. At the same time, we take this opportunity to reaffirm that Talesun Photovoltaic will vigorously expand into the African market, contributing to the growth of renewable energy in Africa and to the global journey toward carbon neutrality.
