As grid parity accelerates, the industry is setting increasingly ambitious targets for reducing the levelized cost of electricity. Consequently, improving module conversion efficiency has emerged as one of the most effective strategies for achieving cost reductions. High‑efficiency solar modules, which offer distinct performance and cost advantages, are poised to expand their market share and are attracting growing attention from both the industry and end‑users.

On February 5, 2019—the first day of the Lunar New Year—China celebrated one of its most important traditional festivals. As the saying goes, “The whole year’s work depends on a good start in spring.” On this auspicious occasion, Talesun Photovoltaic held a ceremony marking the upgrade and modernization of its production lines, with Chen Bohan, President of Talesun Photovoltaic Technology Co., Ltd., attending the event. Simultaneously, the company’s two manufacturing bases—the Changshu plant in Jiangsu Province and the Thai facility—undertook upgrades to their cell and module assembly workshops.

Groundbreaking Ceremony for the Talesun Thailand Company’s Industry 4.0 Capacity Upgrade and Transformation Project

The upgrade will be carried out in two phases. The first phase aims to increase the annual production capacity of monocrystalline PERC cells to 2 GW, with mass‑production efficiency exceeding 22%, while equipping the facility with a range of intelligent manufacturing and inspection systems. Completion of this phase is expected in the first quarter. Under the annual plan, by the end of 2019, the annual production capacity of monocrystalline PERC cells will surpass 3 GW.

In addition, the focus of the module‑level production line is on upgrading to half‑cell module encapsulation technology. Because half‑cell modules exhibit lower power‑loss during encapsulation, the market share of half‑cell technology is expected to grow substantially in the future. Among all existing technologies, half‑cell is relatively mature in terms of equipment, yield, and actual production output, enabling it to swiftly and effectively meet market demand for high‑power products. A 72‑cell polycrystalline half‑cell module can achieve a power rating of up to 350 W, while a 72‑cell high‑efficiency monocrystalline half‑cell module can reach 390 W.

This production-line upgrade not only expands capacity for high-efficiency products but also elevates the company’s level of modern manufacturing, reduces production costs, and further enhances both productivity and product quality. As a result, Talesun Photovoltaic will significantly strengthen its competitiveness in key international markets, particularly in Europe, the United States, Japan, and Australia. In addition, a project to upgrade the production line for large‑wafer modules has been approved; the renovation is scheduled to commence in the first half of 2019. Following the upgrade, the power output of the 72‑cell monocrystalline modules will reach 400 W, delivering a tangible improvement in module conversion efficiency. Through sustained investment, Talesun will continue to unlock the full potential of advanced cell technologies, spearhead the widespread adoption of high‑efficiency products, drive further reductions in the levelized cost of solar electricity, and pave the way for broader deployment and greater accessibility of photovoltaic energy in the years ahead.
